The new design retains the crescent but places it within a green triangle. In addition, four stripes were added to symbolize the four islands of the nation: yellow is for Mohéli, white for Mayotte (claimed by Comoros but administered by France), red for Anjouan, and blue for Grande Comore. The four stars next to the crescent also stand for the islands, while the crescent stands for Islam, which is the major religion on Comoros. The flag has a passing similarity to the flag used by the Druze people of the Middle East, but this is most likely coincidental. |
